SUMMARY:Limmud Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Two sessions: \n2:10pm – 3:05pm\nMy Beloved Who is Different: A Millennium of Queer Jewish Poetry\nThis session uses havruta-style study\, a traditional Jewish mode of paired learning\, to explore a tradition of homoerotic Jewish poetry stretching from the Middle Ages until the present. Using poems written in Hebrew\, Yiddish\, Arabic\, Persian\, Dutch\, Russian\, and English\, participants in this session will encounter a diversity of voices that articulate the joys and challenges of love in song and word. \n4:20pm – 5:15pm\nA Rainbow Thread: Forgotten Stories of Queer Jewish Ancestors\nThis session uses havruta-style study\, a traditional Jewish mode of paired learning\, to explore stories that can inspire queer Jewish life today. Come discover centuries of hidden history\, from a gay brawl in a medieval synagogue to a gender-bending Jewish stowaway in colonial Canada\, and from gender transition in a Ukrainian shtetl to gay and lesbian Jewish activists in 1950s America. No previous Hebrew knowledge or Jewish experience necessary.

In reality\, queerness and queer Judaism have been a constant subplot of Jewish history\, if only we care to look.” \nPlease RSVP for the dinner at 6 p.m. and lecture at 7 p.m. We welcome all people regardless of faith tradition.

SUMMARY:Recovering Queer Jewish History\, CWRU
DESCRIPTION:What is the place of gay\, lesbian\, bisexual\, transgender\, and queer Jews in history? Noam Sienna has uncovered documents that until now have been scattered across the globe\, and largely unrecognized. Pulling together these varied sources\, written in over 15 languages—which include literature\, law\, midrash\, and memoir—Sienna has created the first anthology of queer Jewish history. Drawing on his new publication\, A Rainbow Thread\, Sienna spins a complex and varied story about Jewish sexuality and gender across time and space.

SUMMARY:Forgotten Stories of Queer Jewish Ancestors\, Washington
DESCRIPTION:On the eve of Stonewall’s 50th anniversary\, this session takes up the teaching that “we were all at Sinai” to explore stories from the Jewish past that can inspire queer Jewish life today. Come discover centuries of hidden history\, from a gay brawl in a medieval synagogue to a gender-bending Jewish stowaway in colonial Canada\, and from gender transition in a Ukrainian shtetl to gay and lesbian Jewish activists in 1950s America.\nJoin Tikkun Leil Shabbat and The New Synagogue Project for a magical night of learning in community\, beginning with a potluck dinner\, followed by choose-your-own adventure workshops and a Shavuot service. \n\nTikkun Leil Shabbat is an independent\, lay-led minyan that meets approximately every third Friday evening for Shabbat services\, a teaching from a local social-justice organization (called a dvar tikkun)\, and a potluck vegetarian dinner. We are a fiercely egalitarian\, progressive\, inclusive congregation who strives to make the world a better place through a Jewish and social-justice lens. \nThe New Synagogue Project is creating a spiritual and political home for people bound together by a welcoming and liberatory Judaism. We aim to be a community that is multiracial and intergenerational\, including families of all kinds and individuals\, interfaith families and fellow travelers\, people with a diversity of gender identities and sexualities\, and people from a wide range of religious and secular backgrounds and practices.

SUMMARY:Connecting to Queer Ancestors: A Panel
DESCRIPTION:The LGBTQIA+ community has a limited historical record which makes it difficult for younger members\, particularly queers of color and transgender people\, to find history and form connections with our ancestors. Join panelists Andrea Jenkins\, Zaylore Stout\, and Noam Sienna as they reflect on how they were able to establish these connections and discuss the importance of preserving history for queer people to connect with\, learn from\, and be inspired by.  Sponsored by the DML and the CRSL.
